Assam EVM row: EC suspends four poll officials; repoll likely in booth
Friday, 2 April 2021 () The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Friday suspended four poll officials in Assam’s Karimganj who hitched a ride with a polled EVM in the vehicle of a BJP candidate yesterday. The poll panel is likely to order repolling in the booth.

Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital (MMCH) an annex hospital of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) witnessed a surge in consultation as the number of coronavirus cases rise in the state. "The government of Assam is ready with hospitals for the admission of the COVID patients. Initially, patients were admitted at Kalapahar hospital and subsequently will also start giving admissions to COVID positive patients as per the instructions of the higher authorities. We have 62 beds", says Dr Anupal Sharma, Additional Superintendent, MMCH.MMCH is one of the leading hospitals in the state which is an apex hospital of Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH).
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi took a pot shot at BJP by saying that wherever the party and its ideologue RSS go, hatred starts to intensify there. He said, "People of Assam say their history and culture are being attacked. Tamil Nadu and Bengal are facing the same thing." The fifth phase of assembly polls will be held in West Bengal on April 17.
The Assamese New Year -Rongali Bihu, also known as Bohag Bihu began from April 14. Assam Government decided to allow celebrations this year, but with restrictions in public places. The festival will last for seven days and they are known as Chot Bihu, Goru Bihu Manuh Bihu, Kutum Bihu, Senehi Bihu, Mela Bihu and Chera Bihu Rongali or Bohag Bihu begins in mid-April and celebrations continue for several weeks, mainly concentrated on cultural functions. The Assam Government decided to allow Bihu celebrations with strict adherence to COVID appropriate behavior in public places.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has called an all-party meeting to ensure implementation of COVID-19 norms during election rallies. Meeting will be presided by Aariz Aftab, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), West Bengal at Kolkata Circuit House on April 16.Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) delegation also reached to attend the meeting. The discussion is underway.
Reacting on the Election Commission's decision over a 24-hour ban on West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh from election campaigning for making "highly provocative and inciteful remarks", party National General Secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya on April 15 said, "If EC has issued some guidelines, whether it's for my party or somebody else, everyone should have to follow the guidelines. We welcomed the Election Commission's decision." The eight-phase Bengal Assembly elections will conclude on April 29.
After being banned by the Election Commission for making "highly provocative and inciteful remarks", WB BJP chief Dilip Ghosh said, "It is fine. EC wants free and fair elections and this time the elections are little high voltage and this has been started by Mamata Banerjee. Every action has a reaction. EC has all the rights to ban someone if they think someone is not conducting well... Our party is not running by a single person. We have other members who'll hold rallies now. This is a day off for me. Unlike Mamata Banerjee, I am not protesting against EC's decision." The eight-phase Bengal Assembly elections will conclude on April 29.
BJP leader Baijayant Jay Panda spoke on the EMV controversy in poll-bound Assam. He said that the truth on the incident involving an EVM in Karimganj had been revealed in the enquiry by the Election Commission. “There is absolutely no involvement of BJP and any political motive,” Panda said. He claimed that an official vehicle broke down, so they were offered help by another vehicle. A video surfaced on social media purportedly showing EVM in a BJP candidate’s car. The incident took place following the second phase of polling in Assam on April 1. Election Commission has suspended four officials including the presiding officer in the matter.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday slammed the Congress, saying the grand old party "neither has a leader nor policy or ideology". Addressing a public rally in Karimganj ahead of the assembly elections in Assam, PM Modi said, "On one side, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has a policy, leadership, and good intentions. While on the other side, Congress neither has a leader nor policy or ideology." The Prime Minister also criticised the Congress for their alliance with the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF). Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 18 said that Congress' corruption and vote bank-based governance made Assam one of the most disconnected states in India. "Today there is a wave of development and trust in Assam. There is only one issue in Assam today - development. Decades ago, this entire region was one that had better connectivity. However, Congress' corruption and vote-bank-based governance made Assam one of the most disconnected states in India," said PM Modi during rally in Assam's Karimganj.
