CM Yogi chairs meeting with COVID-19 management Team-11 after highest single-day spike

In the view of increasing COVID-19 cases, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on April 12 chaired a meeting with the officers of the COVID-19 management, Team-11. Uttar Pradesh reported 15,353 fresh COVID cases in past 24 hours. Fresh cases took the active tally to 71,241. The total death count has reached to 9,152. The government has imposed night curfew in parts of Uttar Pradesh on April 10.

Amidst the ongoing polling for the fourth phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections on Saturday, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Locket Chatterjee was allegedly attacked in Hooghly's Chunchura. Chatterjee spoke to an Election Commission official saying that she was attacked by locals at polling booth no 66 in Chunchura. She also said that journalists were attacked too. Polling began at 7 am for 44 seats in the fourth phase of West Bengal assembly polls. Long queues of voters were seen outside polling stations across five districts. Voting, which will continue till 6:30 pm, is underway with adherence to Covid protocols. Elections are being held in Howrah, South 24 Parganas, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar and Hooghly. Over 1.15 crore voters will exercise their franchise to decide the fate of 373 candidates. High-profile candidates include Babul Supriyo, Partha Chatterjee and Arup Biswas. Tight security arrangements have been made to ensure peaceful voting. As many as 789 companies of central armed police forces have been deployed to guard 15,940 booths. State police forces have also been deployed at strategic locations to aid central forces. Elections for 294 seats in Bengal are being held in eight phases, results on May 2.

This phase of elections will witness an intense battle between 373 candidates in 44 constituencies. A total of 1,15,81,022 voters will participate in this phase. The counting of votes will take place on May 02.

WB polls: EVMs found at TMC leader residence, ECI assures action

In a shocking incident, the EVMs and VVPATs were found at the residence of a TMC leader in Uluberia at Howrah district of West Bengal amid Assembly elections. According to Election Commission of India (ECI), "The Sector Officer has been suspended in the matter. It was a reserved EVM that has been removed from the election process and severe action will be taken against all involved. ECI stated, "Tapan Sarkar, sector officer of Sector 17 in AC 177 Uluberia Uttar at Howrah district, went with Reserve EVM and slept at a relative's house. This is a gross violation of EC's instructions for which he has been suspended and charges will be framed for major punishment. The Sector Police attached to Sector Officer has also been directed to be suspended. The said EVM and VVPAT have been taken out of the stock and shall not be used in the polls. General Observer Neeraj Pawan has checked the intactness of all seals. These EVMs have now been stored in a separate room in Observer's custody."
