Mamata Banerjee meets kin of Sitalkuchi dead, vows not to ‘spare anyone’
Wednesday, 14 April 2021 () Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee met the families of the five Sitalkuchi residents killed during polling in north Bengal's Cooch Behar. All five deceased were Rajbanshis, she said, alluding to BJP's criticism that she hadn't mentioned the ethnicity of the youth shot dead by bullet-borne assailants while focusing on the four deaths in firing by CISF on a mob.

During her speech at West Bengal Assembly on May 08, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee demanded universal vaccine program across the country. She said, "Rs 30,000 crores is nothing for the central government...There should be a universal vaccine program for all throughout the country." It was her first speech after taking oath as West Bengal CM for the 3rd consecutive time. She also questioned Centre's move to send 4-member MHA team amid post-poll violence reports. She said, "Why is there so much discrimination with Bengal? They sent the central team within 24 hours of oath-taking. Actually, they (BJP) are not ready to accept the public mandate. I never support violence. They are spreading fake news and fake videos."
A 4-member Union Home Ministry team visited Raj Bhavan in Kolkata on May 07. MHA deputed the team to assess ground situation amid post-poll violence in Bengal. The violence has been reported in several parts of West Bengal after Assembly results. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led TMC won the recent-concluded West Bengal polls by majority.
BJP released a purported audio clip of West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee speaking to Sitalkuchi nominee. BJP claimed that Mamata proposed a rally with bodies of Cooch Behar firing victims. Four persons died near a booth in Sitalkuchi constituency of Cooch Behar district. Reports suggest central forces opened fire allegedly after coming under attack from locals. Election Commission imposed a 24-hour campaign ban on Bengal BJP chief Dilip Ghosh. The ban has been imposed over his 'there will be Sitalkuchi in several places' remarks. Commission 'sternly' warned Ghosh and advised him to desist from using such statements. Four people died in a firing incident by CISF in Sitalkuchi during the fourth phase of polls. Officials had said the jawans opened fire after they came under attack from locals. The campaign ban on Ghosh will be in effect from 7 pm April 15 to 7 pm April 16. Reacting to EC's order, Ghosh said he will not stage dharna unlike CM Mamata Banerjee. Earlier, Ghosh was also sent notice by EC for his alleged remarks over the Sitalkuchi incident. Poll campaign has seen EC clamping down on several leaders for objectionable utterances. EC earlier barred Mamata from campaigning for 24 hours for remarks against central forces.

A purported video from Sitalkuchi in Bengal's Cooch Behar is doing rounds on social media. Four villagers had died in the area in an altercation with CRPF jawans during the fourth phase of polling. Ruling TMC said video vindicates its position that there was no provocation for CRPF to fire. TMC MP and spokesperson Derek O'Brien went on to dub it as cold-blooded genocide. The video shows many locals gathered in a field, while some are seen wielding sticks. In the viral video, some central force jawans can also be seen. Soon firing can be heard, though it is not clear who fired the shot. Video shows a ruckus erupt in the area after the shots are fired. Earlier, Cooch Behar SP had said there was rumour that police opened fire. Debasish Dhar had added that the rumour led locals to come out in large numbers. The SP had said that this led the Central forces to open fire in self defence.

IAF continues its efforts towards Covid relief as India fights a devastating second wave. IAF IL-76 aircraft airlifted 3 cryogenic oxygen containers from Singapore on Saturday. As per official statement, the oxygen tankers landed at Panagarh Air base, West Bengal. An IAF C-17 is also bringing 3 oxygen containers & 3 pallets of respirators from Israel. The IAF aircraft will reach Hindan Air base in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. Meanwhile, IAF aircraft are already ferrying oxygen tankers within the country. With over 4.1 lakh new cases, India again reported highest single-day spike on Thursday.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah blamed West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for violence that happened during fourth phase of polls in Cooch Behar's Sitalkuchi. The violent incident had claimed lives of four people. "Didi is abusing BJP unnecessarily. You're mistaken that BJP is contesting against you. It is the mothers, sisters of North Bengal, Rajbongshi community, the Gorkha community, the tea workers, the farmers who are contesting against you," said Amit Shah. He further said, "The 4th phase polls were held in North Bengal. Didi instigated people, told them to gherao CRPF and loot them. People listened to her, weapons were snatched, bullets were fired, four people died. Didi had you not instigated them they wouldn't have died. A fifth person also died. A youth, Anand Burman had gone to cast his vote but TMC goons shot him dead. Didi is speaking about the 4 but nothing on Anand Burman. Why? It's because he belonged to Rajbongshi community that is not a part of her vote bank." Eight-phase Bengal elections will conclude on April 29.
