Saturday, 8 May 2021 Almost a week after winning the Assam Assembly polls, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is likely to decide on the name of its chief ministerial nominee today in a crucial meeting called by the central leadership of the party.
Once a close aide of Mamata Banerjee, Mukul Roy, who joined the BJP with much fanfare, is likely to return to Trinamool Congress along with his son Subhrangshu Roy. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath met Prime Minister Narendra Modi today in Delhi as murmurs grow against him in the party and his government's handling of the pandemic. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma touched a nerve today saying social menaces like land encroachment can be solved if the immigrant Muslims follow a family planning norms and control their population. India reported 91,702 new COVID-19 cases and 3,403 new deaths today. India's test positivity rate continues to decline. It stands at 4.48 per cent, the fourth straight day that it is below the 5 per cent-mark.

Himanta Biswa Sarma submitted support letter to form a government in Assam, state Governor appointed Himanta Biswa to be CM, informed Ranjeet Kumar Dass on May 09. "Our leader Himanta Biswa Sarma submitted a letter to Assam Governor, along with support letters from AGP and UPPL. After that, Governor issued an order, which reads, "I, Prof Jagdish Mukhi, Governor of Assam, hereby appoint Himanta Biswa Sarma to be CM," said State BJP chief Ranjeet Kumar Dass.
A week after results of the Assam Assembly elections were announced, the Bharatiya Janata Party finally ended the suspense about who will be the new Chief Minister. Himanta Biswa Sarma, a minister in the outgoing government has been selected for the top post. He will be replacing Sarbananda Sonowal who may be accommodated in the Union Cabinet in the future. As trends indicated BJP's return to power in Assam, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said the counting of votes is still going on but it is clear that the BJP is forming government in the state. Sonowal attributed the performance of BJP to "public cooperation". According to Election Commission, BJP and its allies were leading on nearly 80 seats in the 126-member Assam Assembly.
