Flyers deferring leisure trips but cancellations not high

IndiaTimes Monday, 6 December 2021
The Delta variant of Covid-19 delayed the wedding of Mayank and Khushi Bansal (names changed on request) from March to last week. And now Omicron has forced this Delhi-based couple to defer their dream honeymoon in Switzerland indefinitely. “Several Schengen states are witnessing an upsurge in cases. Also, we don’t want to fly back to IGIA and spend hours there with thousands of other passengers for our on-arrival RT-PCR test,” Mayank said on Monday

Education Department Now Excluding Some Borrowers From Student Debt Relief

Education Department , Now Excluding Some Borrowers , From Student Debt Relief. The United States Department of Education has released new guidelines that prevent certain federal student loan borrowers from qualifying for the student loan forgiveness program. NBC reports that the update to the Education Department's guidance for one-time student debt relief is a complete reversal of previous guidelines. Previously, the department said that borrowers whose loans were not held by the Department of Education could consolidate their debt into Direct Loans in order to qualify. According to an administration official, the number of borrowers affected by this decision is about 770,000. In August, President Joe Biden announced a sweeping student loan forgiveness program that included up to $10,000 for federal student loan borrowers. There are an estimated 5 million "overlooked borrowers" with commercially-held Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFEL) loans who have been excluded from debt forgiveness. Those with FFEL loans were also excluded from the federal student loan payment pause that was in effect throughout the COVID pandemic. On September 29, news of the policy change was met with fierce criticism from borrowers and student loan experts on social media. According to the Department of Education's website, work is under way to determine if an alternative pathway to debt relief can be found for those with FFEL Program loans

FDA Commissioner Dr. Robert Califf said the agency will utilize "real world evidence" in tandem with data from trials in mice to determine safety and efficacy. . However, 'New York Post' reports that in June, two experts, including Paul Offit, an FDA adviser, , spoke in opposition of rolling out new shots without testing them on humans. . I’m uncomfortable that we would move forward — that we would give millions or tens of millions of doses to people — based on mouse data, Paul Offit, FDA adviser and director of the Vaccine Education Center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, to 'The Wall Street Journal'. Offit contends that flu shots and COVID shots can't be compared when considering the safety of slight modifications without human testing because of the different mutations and protection levels. Proponents of skipping human trials say it will prevent unnecessarily prolonging accessibility to the public. . If we waited for clinical-trial results, thank you very much, we’d get them in the spring. It takes time to do clinical trials. This is just an updating of the previous vaccine that we used, William Schaffner, professor of medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, to 'The Wall Street Journal'

As other nations begin to offer Omicron-specific booster shots, . those in the U.S. may be wondering if they should get a fourth booster shot now... ... or wait for a booster that is tailored to the highly-contagious strain to be available in the U.S. Currently, only those over the age of 50 or those between 12 and 50 who are immunocompromised are eligible for a second booster shot. Currently, only those over the age of 50 or those between 12 and 50 who are immunocompromised are eligible for a second booster shot. While the Omicron booster should be available in the U.S. sometime this fall. health experts recommend that if you're eligible for the booster you should get one as soon as possible. For those who have not been vaccinated or recently had COVID in the past six months. experts recommend a booster in that scenario as well. For those who are not eligible for the booster and have not opted to get one, . experts say waiting for the Omicron booster this fall is a viable option. They also caution that while the Omicron booster will be made specifically to combat that variant, it won't be full-proof protection. Boosters against Omicron are not going to be a magic shield, Dr. Shane Crotty, La Jolla Institute for Immunology, via 'The New York Times'. For those who have received a second booster shot and are considering getting the Omicron booster as well, experts say the extra shot will not make much difference. If you get a booster now and you get another booster Sept. 15, don’t expect that second shot to do anything, Dr. Shane Crotty, La Jolla Institute for Immunology, via 'The New York Times'

The United Kingdom has become the first country to approve vaccine boosters specifically designed to counter the omicron variant of COVID-19. NPR reports that the decision paves the way for people in the U.K. to receive their shots early in the fall season. The Moderna vaccine booster is "bivalent," meaning that it combines two different versions of the vaccine. Half of the mix is aimed at the original strain of COVID, while the other half is formulated to fight the original omicron variant. What this bivalent vaccine gives us is a sharpened tool in our armory to help protect us against this disease as the virus continues to evolve, Dr. June Raine, Head of the U.K.'s Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency, via NPR.
