Why Have Norway’s Olympics Team Ordered 15,000 Eggs?

Why Have Norway’s Olympics Team Ordered 15,000 Eggs?by 👨‍💻 Graham Pierrepoint

Lots of people love eggs – they’re a brilliant source of protein and they’re readily available from a huge range of reliable sources – but do you really love them enough to order 15,000 of them? That’s a stack of protein, and plenty of dipping soldiers that need to be toasted and buttered – so spare a thought for Norway’s Winter Olympic athletes, who found themselves on the receiving end of an unfashionable quantity of chicken produce that, for just over 100 different athletes, is rather on the extreme side for a two-week trip.

It transpires that the Norwegian team wanted to make sure that they had enough eggs in supply so that their athletes could benefit from healthy breakfasts to ensure that they stay fit and supple for the various events that await them in Pyeongchang, South Korea, for the Winter Games. However, thanks to a mistake in translation, a local firm has no doubt had the order of a lifetime, with 15,000 eggs having been shipped to the team instead of the 1,500 that were supposed to be requested. The Norwegians took to Google Translate to try and get their order in the local language – which resulted in a gaffe which is both humorous and bizarre at the same time.

Luckily, the team have been able to return the surplus 13,500 eggs to the local supermarket, meaning that they will thankfully not go to waste – however, this brush with so many chicken eggs has put Norway firmly into the headlines during a Games which will likely be keenly watched for diplomatic reasons as much as for all the medal-grabbing action. With both South and North Korean athletes in attendance, all eyes are on what will happen next – will both nations pull together to offer a memorable and amicable Games?

While athletes from countries with colder climes generally do better at the Winter Games, it is a festival that is much-loved all around the world – with Jamaica and Nigeria, for example, set to take on the bobsled – though controversy has also been raised as Russia has been banned outright from attending. This is largely due to controversy over doping allegations – though some Russian athletes have been permitted to attend under a neutral banner. It should be an exciting couple of weeks – with over 100 different events to take in and enjoy, let’s see who can take home the most golds!
