Trump administration rolls back Obama policy on race consideration for college admissions --
US President Donald Trump has made no secret of how he intends to reshape and remove certain policies formed and developed by Barack Obama and his staff when they were in control of the White House. From healthcare to climate change, Trump has caused quite a stir, even with his own Party members – though, ultimately, a stir of some kind was more or less what he’d promised throughout his election campaign. Who doesn’t remember Trump’s promises to ‘drain the swamp’? In any case, it seems that one particular policy from Obama’s era is set to be scrapped completely by the Trump administration, and it’s one that relates to racial policies and college admissions.
Up to 24 guidance reports have reportedly been scrapped by US Attorney General Jeff Sessions, with many relating to the issue of race when it comes to admitting students to college. Otherwise known as Affirmative Action, the Obama Presidency oversaw changes to the way college admissions were administered in an effort to promote greater diversity and inclusivity at major named colleges and institutions across the US. However, following the departure of Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy in June, it appears that policy changes are set to roll onward ahead of Trump’s future Supreme Court pick to lead the way in Kennedy’s stead.
▶ Trump Administration To Undo Obama College Diversity Policies
With these scrappings in mind, it’s being mooted that the Trump administration will likely advise colleges and academic bodies to no longer consider race when it comes to admitting new students, ending an era which has caused considerable controversy across the US. This form of affirmative action had previously allowed for students of various races to be given particular consideration in order for there to be a fairer chance for all races and backgrounds to attend the college or institution of their choice. In fact, research by the Pew Research Center shows that up to 71% of US citizens, as of late last year, approved of affirmative action. Removing these advice documents will effectively revert matters back to the standards set by the Bush administration ahead of Obama’s arrival.
▶ Trump Admin. to Reverse Guidance On Use of Race In College Admissions
At the time of writing, there’s no official word or line on quite what will happen with regards to racial policies and colleges, though it seems clear that certain advice will be scrapped in order for Trump to streamline matters into his administration’s new plan of action.
