The Week in News: August 11th - August 17thby 👨‍💻 Graham Pierrepoint

Another week has gone – and what do we have to show for it? There’s been various movements in the entertainment industry, we’ve lost some truly phenomenal stars – and yes, Donald Trump has claimed a few headlines of his own (when doesn’t he?). Here’s our brief rundown of some of the week’s most memorable moments for you to digest.

Aretha Franklin Passes Away, Age 76
We lost a colossal star from the music world this week – as Aretha Franklin, the undisputed Queen of Soul, reportedly passed away from pancreatic cancer. Tributes from all over the world – and from industry to industry – have poured out, with the likes of Barack Obama, Elton John and Ariana Grande leading the way. Franklin’s talent is one which will never be replicated, but which will always be inspirational. It’s safe to say that global streaming charts will explode with repeat listenings of some of her biggest and best hits in the days to come – and why not?

Having earned an enormous $150 million globally in its first weekend, The Meg is a summer blockbuster must-see that’s proving to be defying all critical odds and more besides. Is it enough for a sequel?

Get Carrie Fisher Her Star!
The late, great Carrie Fisher – Princess Leia to millions of Star Wars fans – is one of a surprising number of household names yet to get their place on the hallowed Hollywood Walk of Fame – with talk of US President Donald Trump’s star facing a petition for permanent removal from council leaders, talk has turned to Fisher being brought in as a potential replacement – backed by co-star Mark Hamill and sci-fi legend William Shatner. It costs $40,000 to get a Star – and anyone can be nominated. Pop parody legend Weird Al Yankovic has only recently received his!

Snapchat Reports User Decline
Is this a change in direction for social media that few expected? Snapchat has reported that it’s witnessed a dip in user sign-ups for the first time since its rise – and there’s been a loss in stock value, too – with fingers firmly pointing at the hugely unpopular user interface redesign which was launched earlier this year.
