Is Trump Backing Out of the Russian Nuclear Arms Treaty?

Is Trump Backing Out of the Russian Nuclear Arms Treaty?by 👩‍💻 Alice Monroe

US President Donald Trump has made a number of changes and steps during his current term in charge of America, and while some of these have been met with open arms by his supporters and those who remain staunchly Republican, others have been considered controversial, and have been accused of being poorly thought-out. Trump is no stranger to the world headlines for various reasons – his famous use of Twitter, for one, keeps his voice in the public forum. Recently, however, he has announced that the US may well be making a big change to international policy that could divide voters across both wings as well as down the center.

It was over the weekend that Trump announced to reporters that the US would be pulling out of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, which was initially signed by then-US President Ronald Reagan and the USSR’s Mikhail Gorbachev in 1987. The treaty was signed in order to force both the US and Russia to agree to reject certain ground-based missiles. The treaty protected either side as something of a shared interest at the height of the Cold War, meaning that backing out may well stir concerns anew with regard to nuclear warfare. Trump, however, has seen the Treaty as something of a sticking point, and it now appears he is willing to take the US back out of it.

“Russia has violated the agreement, they’ve been violating it for many years,” President Trump announced. “I don’t know why President Obama didn’t negotiate or pull out. And we’re not going to let them violate a nuclear agreement and go out and do weapons and we’re not allowed to. We’re the ones that have stayed in the agreement and we’ve honored the agreement.”

Trump appeared unrepentant regarding his decision on where the US would now be heading. “Russia has not, unfortunately, honored the agreement,” the President continued. “So we’re going to terminate the agreement. We’re gonna pull out.”

“It’s likely that an explanation from the US will be required following the latest scandalous statements,” The Kremlin’s Dmitry Peskov stated. It’s thought that Russian President Vladimir Putin will be addressing such matters with John Bolton – Trump’s national security head – when the two meet in the coming days. Former Russian head Gorbachev has raised concerns that the decision could be a step backwards in the journey towards full nuclear disarmament – and many others may hold the same opinion. We will simply have to see how this matter turns out!
