Plastic has, of course, been grabbing plenty of headlines this year. It’s been brought to our attention over the past 12-18 months, through programming such as David Attenborough’s Planet Earth II, that we are continuing to choke life beneath the waves with our plastic refuse. Single-use plastics, as they have continued to be referred to, have been high on the list of 2018’s major villains – and as such, a host of international bodies and brands have been taking necessary steps to cut down on waste clogging our oceans.
Carlsberg, the popular Danish brewery firm, have recently announced that they will be taking steps to reduce plastic in their packaging by 75%. They will do this, according to The Telegraph, by outright removing infamous plastic ring packaging – which can prove harmful to land animals as well as those at sea. Instead of using such rings, they will glue beer cans together with a simple adhesive in what are being referred to as ‘snap packs’. Said packs were revealed at a recent launch event, and will be debuted soon in the UK – a popular destination for Carlsberg lager.
The bonding is thought to be strong enough to withstand export, yet simple enough to tear through when enjoyed at home. “It’s glued together so you can’t actually see the packaging,” Carlsberg sustainability chief Simon Boas confirmed.
“It’s almost not there, and that is what is extremely exciting from a sustainability perspective.”
Product Development Vice President Myriam Shingleton confirmed that the idea is for such a strategy to become commonplace in years to come. “As always in Carlsberg we will not keep this for ourselves. I’m sure other players will follow when they see (the idea) – and that’s a very exciting journey if more and more players are coming.
“The starting point was going to a hardware shop and buying all the adhesive I could get, all the glue that was there,” advised Christopher Stuhlmann, who has been credited as the innovator behind the plastic-saving packaging. “Over the weekend, I just glued things together and made a short video for my CEO – and so the idea was born.”
The move has been hailed by several environment-focused bodies throughout the world as a huge step towards saving our seas from unnecessary plastic dumping. It’s thought that, once snap packs are rolled out globally, the company will save over 1300 tons of plastic per year. It’s an incredible step in the right direction.
