France proposes central banker Goulard as European Commission candidate
Wednesday, 28 August 2019 France has proposed Sylvie Goulard, the deputy governor of the Bank of France and a former European lawmaker, as its candidate for European Union commissioner, President Emmanuel Macron's office said on Wednesday.
Boris Johnson addresses reporters at the G7 Summit in Biarritz, France, where he said he still hoped to secure a deal from the EU before the UK leaves the Union on October 31, whilst conceding that his European counterparts were 'tough negotiators'.
The European Parliament backed Christine Lagarde on Tuesday as the next president of the European Central Bank, paving the way for her to become the first woman to hold the post. David Pollard reports.
