How Soon Is 'Too Soon'? James Corden Now Knows All Too Wellby

The Harvey Weinstein scandal is something which is opening up to be far more than anyone – at least outside of Hollywood – may have ever expected. With multiple women accusing the movie producer of inappropriate conduct and some even of outright sexual assault, it’s been a week for the mogul that has resulted in a spectacular fall from grace. By all accounts, for good reason – the film boss has been summarily sacked by his own company (where his brother Bob still operates as a director), reportedly separated from his wife and is supposedly undergoing some form of ‘time off’ – likely to recuperate from the unfolding scandal. It’s unclear how many, if any, of the exposed charges will go to court – and just how many of them Weinstein will outright fight or deny in the dock.

The scandal has also opened up the floor to scores of tasteless jokes. While dark humor and the like can be appropriate and even enjoyable, it’s hardly arguable that making light of what several women in the industry have reportedly faced at the hands of Weinstein is fair game – if ever. Therefore, it’s a subject – while touched upon by Saturday Night Live after a rather quiet week on the subject from the stars – which few have been cracking jokes about, and rightfully so. Step forward, then, James Corden – who seems to have made poor judgment indeed in recent days.

Corden is the latest in a string of British stars to have successfully made it over the pond to the US mainstream – with both the Late Late Show and a series of movie voice credits to his name, he’s arguably in the same position Russell Brand was a few years ago. However, following a series of jokes made regarding Weinstein’s alleged conduct at this year’s amfAR charity gala in Los Angeles, it seems that he has some apologizing to do to retain his cheeky, affable image.

Corden has rightfully apologized, therefore, on Twitter – stating that ‘sexual assault is no laughing matter’ and that we was aiming to ‘make light of Harvey’s inexcusable behavior’. ‘I am truly sorry’, he adds – but for those who reacted to Corden’s comments on-stage via social media as it happened, has damage already been done. In any case – the Weinstein allegations continue to unravel – and it is certainly best that jokes like these stay unspoken.
