The Donald-Kim War of Words just got Personalby

The media is loving the verbal tête-à-tête that seems to have been spiralling on between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un for literally months. If the lives of everyone between the U.S. and Pyongyang weren’t potentially at stake, we’re sure many more people would be finding humor in the situation, too – but there have been occasions where the whole debacle feels as if it may be hitting a new low altogether. One of those lows, as it so happens, has just occurred over the weekend.

North Korea has long since attempted to get the rest of the world on side against Trump’s rhetoric and leadership. Recently, their media agency outright stated “The U.S. must oust the lunatic old man from power and withdraw the hostile policy towards the DPRK at once in order to get rid of the abyss of doom.” Pyongyang’s way of wording matters has never changed – but this particular set of comments seems to have gotten Trump rather riled up – on what appears to be a worryingly personal level.

Trump famously uses Twitter to voice his opinions outside of the confines of the media and therefore can be relied upon to tweet about almost anything unfolding in the world – and when it comes to comments made about himself, regardless of which side you stand on regarding the President, he has certainly taken some matters personally . In the case of North Korea’s latest rhetoric, Trump was quick to leap onto Twitter to fire back an equally personal retort .

“Why would Kim Jong-un insult me by calling me “old”, when I would NEVER call him “short and fat?”” he tweeted. “Oh well, I try so hard to be his friend – and maybe someday that will happen!”

Critics and opponents of Trump have invariably pointed out that the President took umbrage at the ‘old’ part of the statement made rather than the ‘insane’ part – and his recent comments appear to highlight just where we may be at in terms of discourse between the two countries.

Those who are concerned about the potential for warfare and the future of our planet in general may even have despaired at this exchange – but, as it stands, the two figureheads are at present too busy sharing words with each other as opposed to bloodshed – at least, we can hope that will continue to be the case.
