Trump to Kim: “My Nuclear Button’s Bigger Than Yours” – Welcome to 2018by

It can hardly be denied that US President Donald Trump is a man who minces his words lightly, if at all. Certainly, his use of Twitter even leading up to his election as Commander in Chief was widely read and talked-about, particularly as this appeared to be a would-be political figurehead who spoke his mind without spin and without censure. This, for a lot of Americans, was extremely appealing – and it’s likely one of the big reasons why Trump was elected at all – however, his use of social media has not only come under derision from both sides of the political spectrum, but has also created a number of sensitive stirs in both the media and in international political relations.

Satire, too, has taken a hit – joking about Trump for many people has been fairly difficult at times as the statesman has proven himself to be a leader beyond lampoon. This is something that can be both bragged about and to be concerned about – and the President’s first headline-grabbing tweet of 2018 could well be something straight out of the satirist’s playbook, or the caricaturist’s sketch pad.

“North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un just stated that the “Nuclear Button is on his desk at all times,”” reads a tweet from Trump dated January 2nd. “Will someone from his depleted and food starved regime please inform him that I too have a Nuclear Button, but it is a much bigger & more powerful one than his, and my Button works!”

While the President may not be lying about the size and nature of his nuclear arsenal, he continues what is already a fascinating tet a tet with Mr Kim by essentially discussing the size of each others’ weapons. Trump followers will praise the President’s continued lack of filter in defiance of spin and traditional media – while others may be concerned, if not amused.

2018 is set to be a huge year for Trump as he strides into his second year in office, after a debut in the White House unlike any other, no matter how you feel about his role – but with the Russian collusion investigation still looming large and with concerns over nepotism in the Oval Office still ticking away in the background, Trump and co are going to need to focus on their administration as much as they are foreign policy – and they won’t have the likes of Steve Bannon or media fan favorite Sean Spicer along for the ride.
