PSU students stage silent protest during National Anthem

Some penn state students sat tonight during the playing of the national anthem at the women's volleyball game.

The peaceful demonstration mirrors similar protests acrossssssssountry in the effort to raise awareness against social injustices.

Aaron thomas, university park carolyn, penn state's naacp chapter organized this silent protest mainly through word-of mouth.

The president says the goal was not to be disruptive.

..but to raise awareness for social issues she says we continue to witness in our nation.

Fists held high and wearing mostly black...some say their efforts go beyond race.

Nicole telfer, silent protestor "we just came to let people know that it's time for a change."

Marquan boyd, silent protestor "it makes everybody aware that we're not gonna stand for police brutality."

Crowd response was civil and some spectators weighed in on their actions.

Bill rehill, spectator "i'real favorable on that, i'd rather people, some of the things they're doing in the nfl, holding hands and doing different things that, i kinda have some issues with that but at the end of the day, that's what our country's all about."

Linda echard, spectator "they sat with their fists and i really don't mind, their entitled to their opinion long as their not bothering anybody else, it's fine."

Shanta mills...president of penn state's naacp chapter...organized the event mostly through word of mouth and social media.

She says protesting at a popular sporting event was the best opportunity to gain attention.

Mills, president, psu naacp "our org understands that just by sitting in is not gonna bring immediate change or anything, i guess what we're more hoping is that people will be more willing to talk about these situations."

Danielle clark, silent protestor "instead of responding in a hateful manner or responding in an ignorant manner at that, we should sit down and question why there's so many people in the word or in this country doing this."

The university has not responded to the students' demonstration.
