(ROUGH CUT - NO REPORTER NARRATION) A 38-year-old man was extracted from a financial building in Palu, Central Sulawesi Monday (October 1), after the search and rescue team worked for three hours to get him out.

Indonesia is struggling to get rescuers to remote areas devastated by an earthquake and tsunami.

Palu, one of the worst hit cities in the quake, saw 1,700 houses in one neighbourhood being swallowed up, with hundreds believed to be buried, the national disaster agency said.

Video obtained by Reuters showed rescuers from the National Search and Rescue Agency, or Human Basarnas, extracting a man who was trapped in the area.

Officials fear the death toll will rise into the thousands.

But so far the number of confirmed deaths stood at around 900 on Tuesday (October 2), most of them in Palu - the main city in the disaster zone where rescuers are hunting for victims in the ruins.
