Massive winter storm claims at least 7 lives

A massive winter storm stretching from the U.S. Central Plains to the Mid-Atlantic coast has claimed at least 7 lives as of Sunday.

Washington, D.C.

Is expected to get almost a foot of snow.

Virginia's governor declared a state of emergency in anticipation of widespread power outages and dangerous conditions on the roads.

Before the storm moved East, it dropped more than a foot of snow in parts of the Midwest.

At least seven people died in highway crashes in Missouri, Kansas and Indiana.

The icy mess shut down roads and forced some drivers to dig themselves out of their cars after being stranded for hours.

The problems rippled through airports as well, as hundreds of flights were cancelled.

This American Eagle jet slid off the runway while taxi-ing to the gate at Columbia Regional Airport in Missouri.

No one was hurt.

The snow is expected to continue into Sunday evening before it tapers off.
