West Virginia Teachers Strike Again

West Virginia teachers are striking for the second year in a row.  The state's teachers union announced the move on Monday.

Educators and school workers are protesting a  funding bill  that's working its way through state legislature.  The bill would  dedicate some state funds  for private school vouchers and create charter schools, instead of investing that money into public schools.

School voucher programs put state funds into a special account to help people who are eligible pay for private school.  The West Virginia branch of the American Federation of Teachers argued the bill "defunds public education [and] retaliates against teachers who stood up for their students last year."  There's been some back and forth in West Virginia's House and Senate over the measure.

The bill  started in the Senate .

It passed there with the proposals for public school vouchers and creating charter schools.

Then the House stripped the bill of those contested proposals and sent it back to the state Senate, which added the proposals back into the measure.

On Monday, West Virginia's Senate sent the bill to the House again.  Almost exactly a year ago, West Virginia teachers staged a walkout to protest rising health care costs that were lowering their wages and forcing them to get multiple jobs.

That walkout was followed by a number of teacher strikes across the country.
