Islamabad denies Indian airstrike hit militant camp; warns of retaliation

ROUGH CUT.

NO REPORTER NARRATION Pakistan's top civilian and military leaders on Tuesday (February 26) rejected India's comments that it had struck "terror camps" inside Pakistan, vowing to prove India's claims wrong and warning that it would retaliate against Indian aggression.

Pakistan's National Security Committee (NSC), comprising top civil and military officials including Prime Minister Imran Khan and army chief Qamar Javed Bajwa, said in a statement after a hurriedly-called meeting in Islamabad that it "strongly rejected Indian claims of targeting an alleged terrorist camp near Balakot and the claim of heavy casualties." Addressing a news conference after the meeting, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi warned that "Pakistan shall respond at a time and place of its choosing." Earlier on Tuesday, India said its warplanes struck a militant training camp inside Pakistan, killing "a very large number" of fighters, raising the risk of conflict between the nuclear armed neighbours, though Pakistan officials denied there had been any casualties.
