MCCONNELL UPSOUND Republican support for President Trump's national emergency declaration on the U.S.-Mexico border on Monday appeared to be unraveling… …after Republican Senator Rand Paul over the weekend came out in FAVOR of a resolution BLOCKING Trump's emergency order… MITCH MCCONNELL SOT Trump declared his controversial national emergency last month after Congress rejected his demand for $5.7 billion dollars to build his signature border wall..
The order allows Trump to pull federal funds from the MILITARY to build the wall… a move many of his own Republicans openly oppose.
… Paul's announcement gives Democrats the FOUR REPUBLICAN VOTES they need to REJECT THE order in the Republican-held Senate, after the measure sailed through the HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES last week...with 13 Republicans GOING ALONG with the Democrats.
The other Republican senators backing the measure: North Carolina's Thom Tillis, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine.
Trump has said he will VETO the resolution if the Senate approves it… but it would still be a stinging political loss for Trump…who has failed for more than two years in office to persuade Congress to fund his wall…a central promise of his presidential campaign.
But House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Monday said she hoped it wouldn't come to that….
"Maybe he'll just withdraw it, as some of his Republican senators are asking him to do because they know it undermines the Constitution of the United States." His demand for the wall sparked the record 35-day partial government shutdown that polls showed Americans blamed on Trump and the Republicans..
Trump's national emergency declaration is already being challenged in the courts.
McConnell has said the Senate vote on the bill to block it would take place later this month.
