36 Countries Sign Open Letter Denouncing Saudi Arabia

A group of 36 countries have signed an open letter criticizing Saudi Arabia for its human rights abuses.

The letter, which was read at a meeting of the United Nations Human Rights Council, calls on Saudi Arabia to end the jailing of human rights activists for "exercising their fundamental freedoms" and to release all the information it has about the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

According to the statement, the signees are "particularly concerned about the use of the counterterrorism law and other national security provisions against individuals peacefully exercising their rights and freedoms." The joint statement also called for the release of a group of jailed women's rights advocates, amid reports that the activists have been tortured during their incarceration.

It was signed by all European Union countries as well as Iceland, Australia, Canada, Norway, New Zealand, Monaco and Montenegro.
