PG&E responds to fire safety blackout plans

To learn more.## pg&e says it will cut power to more than 5 million people in times of extreme fire danger.

That means?*yo* could be without power for up to five days.

Good evening?

I'm hayley watts.*action news no* reporter luna breaks down the impacts this could have on the north state.

Soundbite: shut the power off shut it off.

Don't let this happen again.

Don't let this happen again.

No way.

Luna: its almost been 6 months since the camp fire.

According to the wall street journal, pge says it plans on shutting off the power to more than 5 million people any time theres a hig* risk for a fire.

Soundbite: shut that power off & why not?

I don't blame pg&e im sure they had their hiccups, this is a big wakeup to everybody that were going to have to get some kind of control on this land so this tragedy never happens again luna standup: pge says it cant keep powerlines from sparking a fire and pulling the plug altogether is their best solution even if it means some people wouldn't have power for 5 days.

Soundbite: i know it probably feels frustrating to a lot of people that they might be out of power but for me, if i could trade having my house for having my power out for 5 days or even a month, i would trade it in a heartbeat.

To me its worth it, theyre doing it out of protection for people theyre not doing it to be a nuisance, so i support it i thnk it's a good idea luna: i asked cal fire what kind of strain this puts on first repsonders to*protec* people.

They say you should at least have a 3 day plan.

Rick carhart: making those plans and talking about it talking to your neighbors and talking to your family, just being as prepared as you possibly can be so this stuff doesn't catch you by surprise and the more you prepared you are the less likely you are to panic and the more likely you are to more able to make rational decisions and be safe and remain safe woman: if people are having concerns about things that might come up when the powers out the responsibility of the community to take care of what those needs might be luna: we've reached out to pg and e to find out what this means in terms of their ability to i asked pge what this means aout their ability to safely provide electrity... a rep from pg&e explained that this practice is not unique to their company.

Pg&e says we'll get 48 hours notice before a shu?down.

It will only happen on red flag warning days when winds are 25 miles per hour or higher, dry soil and humidity below 20 percent.

This is a map of areas impacted?

It now includes tier 2 areas which iincludes eastern parts of chico, oroville and much of redding.##
