Balloon 'Tank Man' commemorates Tiananmen crackdown

ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION): Visitors to one of Taipei's most popular tourist sites were surprised on Tuesday (May 21) by a giant balloon artwork in the shape of "Tank Man" to commemorate a crackdown on student-led pro-democracy protests in and around Beijing's Tiananmen Square in 1989.

The giant balloon display is a reconstruction of a historic moment where a man stood in front of a tank brigade to block their access to the city center of Beijing.

The artwork, which sits in front of Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, measures seven meters in height and fifteen meters in length and was commissioned by Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council, a government agency dealing with policies concerning China.

According to the Taiwanese artist called Shake, who lead the implementation, the idea for the balloon "Tank Man" came from the works of Chinese political cartoonist Badiucao, which has featured the iconic unknown man prominently.
