Trump shields census documents from Congress

SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) REP.

ELIJAH CUMMINGS, CHAIRMAN, HOUSE OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE, SAYING: "This begs the question, what is being hidden?" The White House stepped up resistance to congressional oversight Wednesday.

President Trump asserted executive privilege as he refuses to turn over requested documents tied to his administration adding a citizenship question on the 2020 U.S. Census.

SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) U.S. PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP, SAYING: "I think when you have a census and you're not allowed to talk about whether a person is a citizen or not that doesn't sound so good to me." The Justice Department delivered the news in a letter to the Democrat-controlled House Oversight Committee.

The decision not to comply with committee chairman Elijah Cummings' request set off fireworks ahead of a vote to hold Attorney General William Barr and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross in contempt of Congress for refusing to comply with a subpoena over the census question.

SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) REP.

ELIJAH CUMMINGS, CHAIRMAN, HOUSE OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE, SAYING: "And although we have limited information about this scheme, we've been blocked from fully determining the real reason the administration sought to add the citizenship question." SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) REP.

ALEXANDRIA OCASIO-CORTEZ, (D)-NY, SAYING: "I don't want to issue a subpoena.

Nobody wants to be in a position where you have to issue a subpoena of an administration official because we are a co-equal branch of government, and it should be expected that when we ask a question, we get a response; but, when we don't, we have to do our job." Democrats are outraged at the White House's continued attempts to block the multiple investigations of the president.

Republican committee members insisted the Administration is cooperating with Congress on the census question, and Democrats should be patient.

Lawsuits have already been filed to stop the citizenship question from even showing up.
