Release of Student Alek Sigley from North Korean Prison Announced by Australian PM

Alek Sigley, a 29-year-old Australian student who had gone missing on June 25 while living in Pyongyang, was released from prison in North Korea on July 4 and brought to the Australian embassy in Beijing.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison made the announcement to the House of Representatives, and paid tribute to the Swedish authorities who assisted in the negotiation of Sigley’s release.

“This outcome demonstrates the value of the discreet, behind the scenes work of officials in resolving complex and sensitive consular cases, in close partnership with other governments,” Morrison said in a statement.
