Canadian man survives plunge into Niagara Falls

NIAGARA FALLS, CANADA β€” A man was swept over Niagara Falls and miraculously survived a fall down into the waters below, on Tuesday, July 9.

Niagara Falls Park Police tweeted they were called to rescue the man at the waterfall at 4:00 a.m.

They rushed to the scene and watched the man, identified as Canadian, as he climbed over the retaining wall at the Horseshoe Falls and was swept away by the water.

Officials then searched the lower river basin and found the guy beneath the Journey Behind the Falls observation platform, the Buffalo News reports.

The police said the man was "sitting on rocks" at the edge of the water.

He was rescued with non-life threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital for further assessment.

Jim Diodati, mayor of Niagara Falls, Ontario told the Buffalo News he believes record high water levels may have saved the man's life.

"When Lake Erie is higher and flowing more robustly to Lake Ontario, there is a better chance of missing the massive boulders under the Horseshoe Falls," Diodati told the newspaper.

Authorities have yet to reveal the identity of the man due to privacy laws.
