Massive monsoon landslide sweeps away a southern Indian village

At least 10 people were killed and several feared trapped after a landslide swept away a southern Indian village.

The landslide hit Puttumala village, near Meppadi town, in the Wayanad district of Kerala state.

It hit at around 17:00 local time.

There is an ongoing rescue operation by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), police officials and local people.

Reports said a hillside collapsed, covering several acres of land, including two residential buildings for a local tea estate.

A local temple and a mosque were said to have escaped the deluge.
