North Korea has fired two projectiles off its eastern coast.

And this time - it says it's shutting down peace talks with South Korea too.

Friday's (August 16) launches are just the latest in a string of tests.

According to a U.S. official, at least one of the projectiles appeared to be a short-range missile.

The tests come only a day after South Korean President Moon Jae-in vowed to pursue dialogue to help unify the two Koreas by 2045.

But it seems North Korea has other ideas.

In a statement on official state media a government spokesman said there wasn't anything to talk about and called President Moon 'impudent' for his remarks.

But the spokesman did leave open the possibility of talks with the United States.

President Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un recently agreed to revive nuclear negotiations.

But that commitment was made in June and nothing has happened since.

In fact, Trump has played down the recent launches saying they don't violate Kim's promise to stop testing nuclear weapons and long-range missiles.

South Korea on Friday (August 16) responded to the news, saying dialogue was the only way forward.

(SOUNDBITE) (Korean) SOUTH KOREA'S UNIFICATION MINISTRY DEPUTY SPOKESMAN, KIM EUNHAN, SAYING: "The talks between South Korea and North Korea are the only way of implementing an inter-Korean joint declaration.

We can also use these meetings to share opinions.

This is our unchangeable stance and we urge North Korea to respond positively." North Korea is up in arms over ongoing military exercises between Washington and Seoul.

Trump says Kim has assured him that the launches will stop as soon as the exercises end.
