Hundreds evacuated as wildfire rages in the Canary Islands

The wildfire started in the town of Valleseco on Saturday (August 17), and an emergency area was also declared for the municipalities of Moya and Tejeda.

Four thousand people were evacuated on Sunday (August 18), as officials warned that tackling the blaze was being complicated by a combination of high temperatures, strong winds and low humidity.

Ten planes and helicopters, as well as around 700 firefighters on the ground including about 200 from the military, were battling the fire.

Around 1,700 hectares have been burned and 11 roads have been closed.

Tejeda was evacuated last week because of an earlier wildfire.
