A Brief History Of Voting Rights

September 24 is National Voter Registration Day, which is celebrated on the fourth Tuesday of every September.

While the founding fathers saw voting as a fundamental tenant, the right was denied to many citizens for centuries.

Business Insider reports that from 1776-1856, voting was restricted to property-owning white men.

The right to vote was eventually granted to white women with the 19th Amendment in 1920.

Men and women of color would continue to fight for voting rights decades after technically receiving the right to vote.

The civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s transformed voting rights for people of color.
