Apple under fire over app that aids HK protesters

Apple is the latest big firm to get dragged into Hong Kong's turmoil.

The company is under fire over an app available on its phones that tracks the movements of police around the city.

It's being used by protesters there during the ongoing, sometimes violent demonstrations.

That's drawn the ire of the People's Daily - the official newspaper of the Chinese Communist Party.

The paper accused Apple of complicity in helping the protesters, and asked if it was 'thinking clearly'.

It said the tech giant had no sense of right and wrong, and ignored the truth.

Recent days had already seen U.S. brands including Vans sportswear and the NBA basketball league fall foul of Chinese sensitivities about Hong Kong.

Now the People's Daily hasn't named any specific apps.

But the HKmap.live app has become a lightning rod for those for and against the protests.

Neither Apple nor the app developer would comment.

But investors took note.

Shares in Apple's Chinese suppliers fell on Wednesday (October 9) following publication of the People's Daily piece.
