Fashion icon Westwood joins climate protest

British fashion designer Vivienne Westwood joined a protest outside the London headquarters of BP on Friday.

The city has been hit for days by climate change demonstrations.

Matt Larotonda reports.

British fashion icon Vivienne Westwood joined a climate change protest outside the London headquarters of BP on Friday (October 18).

The designer and socialite demanded an end to what she called global "government corruption's" role in the environmental crisis.

She was flanked by two activists from Papua New Guinea.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) BRITISH FASHION DESIGNER DAME VIVIENNE WESTWOOD, SAYING: "We need to do something about Papua New Guinea because the rainforest is a quarter of our breath, and Papua New Guinea is the second largest rain forest in the world.

(...) Capitalism is the problem, we've got to fight it." The city has been hit for days by climate change demonstrations by the Extinction Rebellion protest group.

On Thursday (October 17) some London commuter train lines were brought to a standstill when members climbed atop the carriages.

Scuffles broke out when angry commuters dragged some of the protesters off.
