Thousands gather for 'martyrs' vigil amid Hong Kong protest

The lights from thousands of cellphones lit up Hong Kong's Tamar Park on Saturday night (November 9), as protesters held a vigil for, who they call, ''martyrs''.

It comes after 22-year-old university student Chow Tsz-lok died in hospital this week following a high fall from a multi-story park during a protest.

(SOUNDBITE)(English) PROTESTER, COLA CHEN, SAYING: "Although, we feel sad we need to continue our movement, so we need to gather here together here so we can voice out something to the government and police force." Protesters secured rare permission from the police to hold the evening rally.

Activist Joshua Wong was among the estimated 7,500 attendees-- some of whom sang hymns and carried flowers.

(SOUNDBITE)(English) PRO-DEMOCRACY ACTIVIST, JOSHUA WONG, SAYING: "Our friends who were arrested 700 of them were university or college students and I hope people around the world could stand with Hong Kong especially we already suffering in humanitarian crisis." The death of the Chow Tsz-lok is likely to fuel even more anger against the police.

Who are under pressure over accusations of excessive force, as the former British colony grapples with its worst political crisis in decades.
