Democrats agree to support new USMCA trade deal

Leaders from Canada, Mexico and the United States sign a new trade deal after democrats agree to support a revised version of the USMCA.

Democrats agree to support new USMCA trade deal

(SOUNDBITE) (English) INTELLIGENCE CHAIRMAN ADAM SCHIFF, SAYING:"We stand here today because the president's continuing abuse of power..." On a day when U.S. Democrats announced formal charges against Republican President Donald Trump - south of the border, a victory both parties can celebrate.

Representatives from the U.S., Canada and Mexico met Tuesday to sign the new U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement.

The deal moving forward after Democrats agreed to support the pact with significant changes from the 2018 agreement negotiated by the Trump administration.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) HOUSE SPEAKER NANCY PELOSI, SAYING: "There is no question, of course, that this trade agreement is much better than NAFTA." House democrats had refused to hold a vote until provisions were included to protect workers, the environment, and remove key provisions they said would have benefitted big drug companies.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) HOUSE SPEAKER NANCY PELOSI, SAYING: "We're declaring victory for the American worker in what is in this agreement." The 25-year old North American Free Trade Agreement encompasses $1.2 trillion in annual trade across the continent.

The USMCA was a top priority for President Trump, a frequent critic of the standing trade deal.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP, SAYING: "...probably the worst trade deal ever made, which was NAFTA." The deal still needs approval from lawmakers in all three countries.

A vote is headed to the U.S. House floor next week and then its on to the Senate where it is expected to pass.
