CYCLISTS ON ROAD CYCLING INTO STRONG WINDS STORY: Intrepid bike riders gathered amid the strong winds of Storm Ciara for the sixth ever Dutch Headwind Cycling competition on Sunday (February 9).

Video shows the cyclists making very slow progress in the fierce winds as 300 people in total took part in the 8.5km course in Vrouwenpolder, Netherlands.

A spectator to the event, Wilbert Leering, described the weather in which the event took place as "quite brutal".

About 240 flights to and from Amsterdam's Schiphol airport, one of Europe's busiest, were cancelled on Sunday as the Netherlands saw gusts of up to 120 km per hour (74 mph).

All professional Dutch soccer matches were cancelled in light of the weather, along with most other outdoor sporting events.
