Cars have been swept off a road and homes submerged by water amid devastating flooding when a river in Yorkshire burst its banks.Emergency services scrambled to the town of Snaith in Humberside after the River Aire flooded at around 3pm on Tuesday. A number of traders and homeowners have been forced to evacuate, as photos appear of vehicles and buildings almost completely submerged by water. An emergency refuge has been set up in a nearby building, where Snaith locals have rushed for shelter over the past 24 hours. The Environment Agency, Humberside Police and Humberside Fire & Rescue are all on the scene this morning (Weds). Firefighters have been seen placing sandbags outside properties in Snaith, where four flood warnings and one flood alert remain in place. Mathew Buckley, from East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: "The council is continuously monitoring the situation in Snaith "This is a challenging situation and the council is anticipating further overtopping of the River Aire."A number of properties have been evacuated... and a rest centre has been set up in the town at the Priory Church. "The council will continue to have staff and resources on site."
