Rival monkey gangs wage street war over banana

LOP BURI, THAILAND — Rival monkey gangs fought a bitter street battle over a banana last week in Lop Buri Thailand, according to the Chiang Rai Times.

Citing a video posted to Twitter, the Thai outlet reports that monkeys can be seen fighting each other and chasing one who appears to have a banana.

According to the Bangkok Post, Lop Buri is home to two rival simian gangs, the temple monkeys and city monkeys.

Each faction has their own turf.

The Chiang Rai Times reports that a slump in tourism to the popular temple area has led to a lack of food for the local monkey population who are usually fed by holidaygoers.

That, in turn, may have drove to the mass monkey brawl seen on social media last week.

According to Thai news site Khaosodo English, the monkeys are mostly fed high-sugar and fatty human foods.

All that junk food, the website reports, even led to one becoming obese.
