Nearly one in three Americans ordered to stay home

Nearly one in three Americans were under orders on Sunday to stay home to slow the spread of the coronavirus pandemic as Ohio, Louisiana and Delaware became the latest states to enact broad restrictions, along with the city of Philadelphia.

San Francisco streets are empty and businesses boarded up.

These scenes replicated in cities across the United States on Monday as nearly one in three Americans are now under orders to stay home to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

The orders span 8 states, including some of the most populous, New York and California.

The latest: Ohio, Delaware and Louisiana.

Governor John Bel Edwards said Louisiana saw a 10-fold increase in cases in the past week and has the third highest number of cases per capita.

Cities are also joining in.

Dallas, home to over 2.5 million people, and Philadelphia, with 1.6 million residents, told non-essential businesses on Sunday to close and residents to stay home.

But despite the rules, beaches in California were still crowded over the weekend and in New York City, video showed people in a park playing soccer.

I told New York City I want a plan.

Yesterday I said I want a plan on how they're going to control and reduce the density.

I want the plan today.

I want the state to be able to approve the plan.

More than 400 people in the U.S. have died, according to Reuters' most recent tally, another grim milestone as the number of cases nationwide approached 35,000.

New York remains number one in the nation in confirmed cases with over 20,000, after more than 5,000 new cases were reported in the state overnight as it ramps up testing.
