Sloth bear seized from poachers gleefully plays with barrel drum in southern India

A sloth bear, seized from poachers, beats the summer heat and gleefully plays with a barrel drum in the southern Indian state of Karnataka.

The incident took place at Wildlife SOS Centre in Bannerghatta, Bangalore, on March 26, 2020.

The video shows the sloth bear sitting on his hind legs and playing with a barrel drum hung from two wooden poles.

Sloth bears are threatened by habitat loss and are sometimes captured for use in performances or hunted because of their aggressive behaviour and destruction of crops.

Wildlife SOS brought an end to the 400-year-old practice of dancing bears by taking the last dancing bear off the streets of India on 18th December 2009, further extending rehabilitation and lifelong care to 628 rescued Sloth bears.

The rescued animals are now living peacefully in four large natural sanctuaries across India.
