US father homeschooling son with autism during coronavirus has 'never been so proud'

Some students are not able to adapt as easily as others after schools across the US were shut due to the coronavirus outbreak but this kid from California has taken it in his stride.

Seven-year-old Shawn from California was diagnosed with autism four years ago and his father was concerned about the transition to homeschooling but nevertheless they "made the best of their new reality." Footage shows Shawn full of confidence reading and writing with his father, appearing to be unencumbered by the shift to the homeschooling curriculum.

Shawn's father told Newsflare: "Over the last four years I've watched him make tremendous progress.

"The coronavirus pandemic has thrown many of our lives into uncertainty, my family has not been immune to it.

"Since his diagnosis, my son has struggled with using a pencil and reading.

"I was so afraid of having to homeschool because I didn't know how he would react to such a sudden change.

"As we began to work on his packet, he surprised me by not only writing answers but reading aloud as well.

"I've never been so proud of him.

"I share videos like these hoping this will help other families like mine keep their own hope, their own faith, their own determination.

"I want them to understand autism doesn't have to be a disability, it can be a different ability.

"Different does not mean less."
