Five-year-old boy dresses up for every 'clap for carers'

A cute five-year-old boy dresses as a different key worker for every 'clap for carers' including Boris Johnson - complete with homemade lectern.

Little Alfie Miller, five, wanted to thank key workers - including his prison-officer dad - for their hard work in an original way.

He used a fancy dress doctor's outfit to thank medics one week, but has since gone further - dressing as Colonel Tom Moore, Boris Johnson and even a prison officer.

His dad, who wishes to remain anonymous, is currently living in a motorhome in the prison car park to keep his family safe.

Care worker mum Rachel Miller is thankful the task is keeping Alfie entertained.

Mum-of-two Rachel, from Northampton, Northants., said: "We're helping him along but he's doing what he wants to do and putting it across himself - it's really done his confidence the world of good.

"It kind of happened because there was an outbreak at the prison, so dad moved out.

"Alfie was feeling a little bit down and he wanted to clap for daddy and all the key workers.

"He got a doctor's outfit that he'd been brought previously by one of the grandparents.

"I said, 'why don't you put your doctor's outfit on?'

That's how it started.

"It's just literally a bit of fun - I videoed it and put it on Facebook so that dad could see it and just to share it with family and friends.

"We did a prison officer for daddy the next week - as a tribute to his daddy because he wasn't home and he was missing him.

"Even daddy didn't know he was going to come out as a prison officer.

"He's also lost his great nan as well, which was suspected coronavirus, so we've really done a lot of it to keep him busy and occupied and keep his spirits up.

"It has been amazing fun, he's absolutely loved it." Rachel was overwhelmed with praise on Facebook after she posted the video of Alfie doing his Colonel Tom Moore and received over 4,000 likes and 300 comments.

She said: "It's gone a bit mad on Facebook this week.

"He'd had over 12,000 likes and shares and I've been having messages from all over the place saying, 'can you tell me what he's going to be this week?'

"I'm under loads of pressure to do something now, so yes, we will be doing something on Thursday.

"He's like, 'Mum, you can't tell anyone what I'm going to be this week - it's got to be top secret'!" Most of the ideas have come from Alfie himself - and after watching Boris Johnson at the daily briefings, he wanted to thank him for his hard work too.

Because of lockdown restrictions, the pair have had to make do with items they already had at home - but Rachel's dad and his partner made the lectern out of scrap wood and delivered it to the drive.

Rachel admitted homeschooling and entertaining Alfie hasn't been easy, but they're trying to stay positive.

She said: "It has been difficult, especially with dad being away but I think you've just got to get on with it.

"It's a once in a lifetime thing - it's like I've explained it to Alfie, this is going to be part of history.

"And this is something he'll be able to tell his children and grandchildren about, that he's lived through.

"It's an experience, it's just something we've got to deal with and get on with and we've just got to make the best of it and muddle through it together.

"Just embrace the time you've got at home with your children - this is some time that you will never get back with your children, so make the most of it."
