KARACHI (Reuters) - A Pakistan International Airlines Airbus jet with 99 people on board crashed into residential buildings in the Pakistani city of Karachi on Friday afternoon while approaching the airport.
At least two passengers survived but many others were feared dead.
Smoke billowed from the scene where flight PK 8303 came down at about 2:45 p.m.

Twisted sections of fuselage lay in the rubble of multi-storey buildings as ambulances rushed through chaotic crowds.

Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat attended 'Indo-French joint exercise Desert Knight-21' in Jodhpur on January 21. "The Indian and French air forces have been holding bilateral exercises since 2002. Today we have witnessed 'Exercise Desert Knight 2021'. The significance of this exercise is that Rafale fighters which have been inducted recently in our Air Force and French Rafale aircrafts along with our (Indian) Su-30s, Mirages have trained together and we have shown that how quickly we have adapted to Rafale fighters," said General Bipin Rawat. He also added, "We also flew in a French multirole transport aircraft (Airbus-330) in which they can ferry passengers, do mid-air refuelling and can also convert it into a medical facility too for medical emergencies. We also saw how our Rafales, Su-30s and Mirages were refuelling from it."
Four French Rafale fighter aircraft were seen landing at the Jodhpur Air Force base to participate in 'Exercise Desert Knight-2021' on January 20. Four French Rafale aircrafts will participate in the wargames with the Indian Air Force's Rafale fighter jets. Also, Airbus 330 multirole tanker transport aircraft of French Air Force landed here for 'Exercise Desert Knight-2021'.
Chinese multinational electronics company Xiaomi along with eight other Chinese firms has been put on an investment blacklist by the U.S. Department of Defense. This move prevents American investors from investing in these companies. As per Mashable, the U.S. government alleges that the nine banned Chinese companies have ties to or are controlled by the Chinese military. In addition to Xiaomi, the list also includes Comac, a plane maker that planned on setting up a factory in the U.S. to compete against Boeing and Airbus. Since the time of this move, Xiaomi's shares have plunged by 11% on January 15 morning. Xiaomi is China's second-largest and the world's third-biggest smartphone maker. As per Mashable, Qualcomm Ventures, the venture capital arm of Qualcomm, has invested in Xiaomi.
Several activists rallied in front of the residence of the Ambassador to Pakistan in Washington D.C on January 09 against the arrest of lawmakers and leaders of a civil rights movement, campaigning for Pakistan's ethnic Pashtun minority. Members of the Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM) in the Washington Metro area called for the demonstrations after the authorities announced that Dr Said Alam Mehsud and Ali Wazir were being prosecuted on anti-state charges. The protestors rejected the accusation and demanded the immediate and unconditional release of the leaders. Ali Wazir, a sitting Member of National Assembly (MNA, the Pakistani Parliament), and a senior leader of Pashtun Tahaffuz Movement (PTM) was arrested in the northwestern city of Peshawar on December 16 after a case was lodged in the port city of Karachi. He is accused of making anti-state comments during an unsanctioned rally in the city on December 6. Another prominent Pashtun voice, Dr Said Alam Mehsud was also arrested while participating in a protest against the arrest Ali Wazir.
