The study in medical journal 'The Lancet' adds that it can increase odds of heart failure in coronavirus patients.

The decision has been confirmed by World Health Organization director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Hydroxychloroquine can help treat malaria and lupus, but its effectiveness against COVID-19 remains unknown.

President Donald Trump has often claimed that hydroxychloroquine is useful against the coronavirus.

Trump even recently said that he was personally taking the drug as a precaution.
