Durian fruit mixed with coffee is proving a hit with customers in Thailand.

The unusual dish is being sold by Poonyanuch Thongchan at the Tawanchai cafe in Uttaradit province.

She pours robusta drip coffee onto well-ripened pieces of the pungent yellow fruit and the hot drink is served in a glass.

Aside from being a strangely delicious food combo, she said that their fruits are special varieties called Long Lablare and Mon Thong Durian harvested from Uttaradit province.

Poonyanuch said that customers keep returning for the good taste of the coffee that is enhanced by the creamy taste of the fruit.

The coffee shop owner said: "We have a bumper crop of Durians from our farm, so, I tried to put them together with the coffee we sell at the cafe." The price per cup of Durian-dipped coffee starts at 80 Baht (2 GBP) for Mon Thong, and 120 Baht (3 GBP) for Long Lablare.

Durian is a sweet fruit with a pungent aroma that is cultivated across southeast Asia.

It is also known as the King of Fruits among the Thai people.

In April 2018, Alibaba founder Jack Ma signed a $428 million deal with the Thai government to export durian to China, following strong demand from Chinese consumers.

Ma said that shortly before news of the deal was announced, 40,000 durians were sold online, which rose to 80,000 within a minute.

The Marmite-style love it or hate it fruit is sold widely on street stalls and shops in Thailand in the Spring.

However, many public buildings ban the fruit because of its strong smell.
