Dr. Bernice King, the youngest child of deceased civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., spoke at the funeral of Rayshard Brooks, who was killed by police in a Wendy's drive-thru parking lot, telling his family, "I am here to stand with you."
"This is the great tragedy in our nation that must cease.
We are here because individuals continue to hide behind badges and trainings and policies and procedures, rather than regarding the humanity of others in general and Black Lives specifically," King said.
Brooks' death after being shot twice in the back, with one round piercing his heart, heightened tensions over racism in the United States and police brutality that have raged since the killing of George Floyd in police custody in Minneapolis on May 25.
[NFA] More than 200 friends and family members filled the pews of an historic Atlanta church on Tuesday for the funeral of Rayshard Brooks, a Black man who was shot twice in the back by Atlanta police outside of a fast-food restaurant on June 12. Freddie Joyner has more.
Rayshard Brooks was fatally shot by a police officer last month outside of a Wendy's restaurant. Following his death, protestors in the area recorded a white woman starting a fire in the building. The charred remains of the Wendy's have now been demolished reports CNN. The restaurant became a focal point of protests in the weeks after the 27-year-old Brooks was killed. Brooks has fallen asleep in his car in the drive-thru when the cops were called on him.
June 27 (Reuters) - Princeton University is renaming its public policy school and Wilson College after concluding that U.S. President Woodrow Wilson’s racist thinking and policies “make him an inappropriate namesake.” Announcing the move on Saturday, Princeton University President Christopher Eisgruber said it related to the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and Rayshard Brooks, Black Americans who died at the hands of police in recent months.

As he signed a book ofcondolence in Derry on Monday, Mr Eastwood compared his political hero to thefamous US civil rights leader. “John Hume was our Martin Luther King,” hesaid. “He was the greatest Irishman ever and he achieved something that no onecould ever achieve before him: he ended the Anglo-Irish conflict, the conflictthat had gone on for 800 years, and he gave my generation the opportunity toachieve our political goals peacefully and democratically, and that is anenormous legacy.”

John Robert Lewis has died after a six-month battle with cancer, according to a statement from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Lewis is the son of sharecroppers. He survived a brutal beating by police during a landmark 1965 march in Selma, Alabama. He became a figure of the civil rights movement and a longtime US congressman. Lewis was a follower and colleague of Martin Luther King Jr. He participated in lunch counter sit-ins, joined the Freedom Riders in challenging segregated buses.

Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar represents Minneapolis, Minnesota in congress. She is facing a stiff primary challenge from lawyer Antone Melton-Meaux. Melton-Meaux raised an absurd $3.2 million in the second quarter of this year to Omar’s $471,000. Omar represents a sizable Jewish community in her district. Police near Minneapolis, Minnesota used drones last week to check on an enormous threat to the local social order. Namely, CNN reports the drones were activated to check if sunbathers at a lakeside beach were breaking the law by going nude or topless. Golden Valley city officials say the police department used the high-tech surveillance devices at Twin Lake on July 10 after receiving complaints from the public. This stuff has been going on there for decades.
Attorneys for the family of George Floyd filed a federal civil lawsuit on Wednesday. The suit is against the city of Minneapolis and the police officers involved in the death of George Floyd. Floyd died May 25 after former officer Derek Chauvin used his leg to pin Floyd's neck to the ground for nearly nine minutes. Chauvin was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. The lawsuit was filed in US District Court for the District of Minnesota.
