Decatur City Council Passes Face Mask Resolution

Decatur considers provisions to reduce the spread of the Coronavirus though face masks

We want to turn our attention back to the face mask oridnance -- that could be in the city of decatur's future.

Waay31's megan reyna joins us live now with what people there had to say about the plans.

Megan.... right here is a copy of the mandatory mask wearing ordinance council was able to look over tonight.

However -- they want more time to make some adjustments based off what the community had to say at the meeting.

Several -- not wearing masks and against any criminal penalty for doing so -- others pleading for the council to take action to help stop the spread.

Mos says:"don't tell me how to live my life, i spent 17 years in the united states army, defending our people and our constitution and our freedoms."

Mos says:"we must remember that we are not just talking about ideals and theories, we are talking about people's lives."

In a socially distanced city chamber -- the council heard several public statements tonight -- and read off emails as well.

Many of those who showed up were against the ordinance.

Mos says:"my heartbeat goes up, i don't feel healthy when i do it."

Mos says:"really what it boils down to at the end of the day is personal liberty and freedom because where is it going to stop?"

Councilman billy jackson initiated monday night's special meeting.

He said the city is running out of time to take action to help stop the rapid growth of coronavirus cases in decatur and morgan county.

Jackson says:"the numbers are out there, and we're doing more testing and realizing there are more numbers out there than we actually realized than we actually think are out there, its important that we take precaution."

Jackson said the resolution itself isn't enough.

But he hopes it'll be a wake up call for people in decatur.

There are several exceptions in the current ordinance.

It would exempt children 2 years old and younger.

You wouldn't have to wear a mask when eating or drinking... during a medical exam or procedure... a hair care service... working out... or at places of worship.

But council president paige bibbee says they'll continue to adjust that list.

Bibbee says:"i think there are special circumstances that we will address in the ordinance that absolutely have merit, so i think those need to be worked out."

In order to pass this ordinance tomorrow night -- the vote does not have to be unanimous however -- if it is -- this ordinance will go into effect immediately.

If that doesn't happen -- but there's still a majority vote -- it would have to sit through two agenda meetings-- so about two weeks.
