Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh launched Naval Innovation and Indigenisation Organisation (NIIO) through an online webinar on August 13. UP CM Yogi Adityanath and others were also present at the event. NIIO puts in place dedicated structures for end-users to interact with academia and industry towards fostering innovation and indigenisation for self-reliance in defence in keeping with vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday listed some of the items on the negative list released by India. Singh said the negative list of 101 items will promote indigenization in defence production. The defence minister said not only Water Jet Fast Attack Craft but other projects are also included in the list of banned items. The comprehensive list has assault rifles, artillery guns, missiles, attack helicopters etc. On Monday, the defence ministry had announced a ban on import of 101 types of military equipments to boost India’s economy and make India self-reliant in defence production. The announcement was made during the inaugural session of Atma-Nirbharta Week. The defence minister said the saved money can be invested in PSUs of defence industry. Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had released a negative list of 101 items to promote indigenization in defence production. "This is a comprehensive list. MoD (Ministry of Defence) estimates that orders of about four lakh crores will be given to domestic industry in next five to seven years," Rajnath Singh. Singh made this statement while addressing 'Self-reliant India Week' event through video conference in South Block on August 13.

In West Bengal, the state government withdrew the order regarding complete lockdown on August 28. However, lockdown orders remain in operation for August 20, 21, 27 and 31. India's total case tally has crossed 23.29 lakh, while the death toll has crossed 46,000. Over 16.39 lakh patients have been discharged so far. In international news, the discovery of a new case after 102 days in New Zealand has led the Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, to say that postponement of the upcoming general elections is a possibility. Meanwhile, the Russian government said that the first batch of its Covid vaccine is likely to be released within two weeks. Russia has become the first country to declare a vaccine ready for use. NITI Aayog member and former Director-General of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) Vijay Kumar Saraswat on August 09 hailed the step taken by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to impose import embargo on 101 defence items. "It is a very major initiative of GOI and particularly the Ministry of Defence in line with the announcement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for making the country self reliant under Aatmanirbhar Bharat," said VK Saraswat. He added that the list of 101 equipments which have been given today will indicate the capability of the country to manufacture, design and develop. "The initiative taken by the Centre certainly goes a long way in promoting the development, production and indigenizing of the capability which exist in the country today."
Ambassador of Israel to India Ron Malka on July 31 visited special testing site created at Dr Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital today to witness ongoing trials since last three days of rapid COVID-19 testing. Malka was accompanied by Principal Scientific Adviser to GOI, K. VijayRaghavan. This joint research is progressing according to the plan. It's being jointly developed in cooperation with DRDD Ministry of Defence Israel and DRDO, CSIR and PSA, India.
The Defence Research and Development Organisation-built Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel COVID Hospital is all set for COVID patients. While speaking to ANI, DRDO Chairman, G Satheesh Reddy on July 05 stated that to fight against COVID-19 pandemic, DRDO has manufactured 70 Made in India products so far. Adding on it, he further said we can manufacture around 25,000 ventilators each month if there is a need. We are ready to export them too. He said, "The hospital is equipped with all the facilities for patients free of cost as well as Army personnel will provide their services 24*7. A garbage dumping land was levelled and cleared to build the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel COVID19 Hospital." The cases of coronavirus continued to rise in India. Maharashtra crossed 5.6 lakh mark of COVID-19 cases and reached to 5,60,126. 11,813 new COVID-19 cases and 413 deaths reported in Maharashtra on Aug 13. Delhi reported 956 new COVID-19 positive cases and 14 deaths today. 9996 new COVID-19 positive cases and 82 deaths have been reported in Andhra Pradesh in the last 24 hours. 6706 COVID-19 cases and 103 deaths reported in Karnataka today.
Union Minister G Kishan Reddy visited DRDO-built COVID Hospital near Air Force Station in Delhi on July 05. CM Arvind Kejriwal also visited the COVID hospital. Speaking on it, CM Kejriwal said, "For now, there is no scarcity of hospital beds, we have over 15,000 beds out of which 5300 are occupied. There is a paucity of ICU beds. If there is any spike in COVID cases, these ICU beds are very critical for us." The DRDO-built Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel COVID-19 Hospital in Delhi Cantonment is the temporary hospital structure. The hospital will have 1,000 beds including 250 ICU beds.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal offered prayers to Lord Krishna on the occasion of Janmashtami. CM Kejriwal visited ISKCON Temple in east of Kailash on August 12. Kejriwal performed 'aarti' at the temple to seek blessings from Lord Krishna. Devotees across the country are offering prayers on Janmashtami.
