The 1960s were a turbulent decade for India's relations with its 2 northern neighbours -- Pakistan and China.

While India and China fought a war in 1962, Pakistan raided India and was pushed back in 1965 at the cost of heavy loss on the aggressor's side.

Yet, despite the bloodshed, there was no end to hostilities.

In 1965, while India was engaged in a war with Pakistan, sensing the opportunity to flex its muscles, China told Indian soldiers to clear Nathu la and Jelep la passes.

And this triggered what is often called the second Sino-Indian war.
