Covid update: India on herd immunity; Kolkata extends flight ban till Aug 15

From India stating that herd immunity is not a strategic option yet, to Kolkata extending flight ban, here are the top updates on coronavirus.

Health Ministry on Thursday said herd immunity is not a strategic choice for India considering the size of its population.

Health ministry also announced that India’s fatality rate globally is lower and stands at 2.23%.

The number of recovered people in India is nearing the 10 lakh-mark.

The recovery rate in India has also improved to 64.51%, the ministry statement said.

Health Ministry also said that India is working on developing two indigenous vaccine candidates which are in phase 1 & 2 clinical trials.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu and Bihar extended lockdown till August 31 and August 16 respectively.

Earlier, Maharashtra had also extended lockdown in the state till August 31.

Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh saw a massive jump in new cases with over 10,000 infections being reported on Saturday. India's total case tally has crossed the 20.88 lakh mark with over 42,500 deaths so far. While India has 6.19 lakh active cases, over 14.27 lakh patients have been discharged so far. In international news, some states in the United States of America have allowed schools to reopen even as the US remains the worst Covid-hit nation so far. In international news, the discovery of a new case after 102 days in New Zealand has led the Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, to say that postponement of the upcoming general elections is a possibility. Meanwhile, the Russian government said that the first batch of its Covid vaccine is likely to be released within two weeks. Russia has become the first country to declare a vaccine ready for use.
