Sutherlin student tests positive for COVID-19

Student in the sutherlin school district tested positive for coronavirus over the weekend& following the first week of school.

But, as kezi 9 news reporter evita garza shows us -- the school plans to stay open for in person learning.

Nikki rommel tells me she has always had mixed feelings about sending her child back to the classroom during a pandemic.

But now that the sutherlin school district saw their first covid-19 case over the weekend& she says she doesn know what to think.

It scary thinking about putting your kids in danger if they get sick?

According to the district facebook page, the positive student attends east primary school& which started in-person learning last monday.

But kindergarten through third graders are the only students in the building& and they are split into small groups.

Public health officer bob dannenhoffer says this case poses a low risk to the community.

Now, the teacher and students who were in contact with the positive student are quarantined.?in a typical school, you might see kids on the bus, kids in the classroom, kids at lunch, kids in music class& if there was a case, it would be hard to figure out who they had contact with?

1:01 evita: even though this is the first case in the sutherlin school district, i told it not will change the district reopening plans.... which include in person learning for all students?

District officials said they were one of the few schools in douglas county that cleared for in person learning -- despite the recent spike in cases that forced other schools to change their plans last minute.

Right now, the district plans to have all grades back by november.

I reached out to the district for futher comment, but they declined.
